The Institute hosted an in-person discussion on how artificial intelligence can help address the structural challenges faced by international adjudicative bodies. The event brought together Dr Dana Burchardt (WZB Berlin Social Science Center) and Dr Rishi Gulati (University of East Anglia), with the discussion moderated by Professor Philippa Webb, Director of the Institute.
Drawing on their forthcoming book project on AI and international law, the speakers examined how international courts and tribunals are already using AI tools to manage resource constraints, including case management, research, and administrative support. They also explored the potential for AI to respond to broader systemic issues, such as increasing caseloads, delays, and limited institutional capacity.
The discussion highlighted both the opportunities and the risks associated with AI adoption in international adjudication, emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and human oversight. The event concluded with an engaged audience discussion, reflecting strong interest in how technology can be responsibly integrated into international dispute resolution and judicial practice.
