Philippa Webb KC and Lodovica Raparelli present at AI Week 2026

19-20 May 2026

AI Week is Europe's largest artificial intelligence event, bringing together over 25,000 attendees, 700 speakers, and representatives from 48 countries in Milan. Now in its seventh edition, it is a leading platform for exploring AI's impact across sectors.

Our co-founder and Director, Professor Philippa Webb KC, presented "Harnessing AI to Advance Justice", outlining how the Institute is building AI-powered tools to close the global justice gap — from a WhatsApp chatbot helping women and girls in Malawi understand their rights and connect with lawyers, to an AI tool for journalists facing detention developed with the Committee to Protect Journalists, to the Fair Trial Adviser built with Microsoft to help judges apply international fair trial standards in the age of AI. She emphasised the Institute's co-design approach: over 350 women, students, and first responders in Malawi shaped the design of these tools, ensuring they are built with communities, not just for them.

Lodovica Raparelli, Head of Research and Projects, presented "AI in the Courtroom: Lessons from the World", drawing on findings from the OITJ's AI Justice Atlas — a comparative resource tracking how AI is being used and regulated in criminal proceedings across jurisdictions including Brazil, India, China, and the UAE. She highlighted a striking gap: while 44% of judicial actors worldwide already use AI, only 9% have received any training on how to do so responsibly. She also presented the UNESCO–Oxford MOOC AI, Justice and the Rule of Law, a free global course designed to reach judges in over 160 countries.
