Institute Launch

06 October 2025

The Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice was officially launched on 06 October 2025. The event brought together leaders from academia, civil society, and the technology sector to explore how technology, including artificial intelligence, can be harnessed to advance justice and strengthen the rule of law worldwide. The discussion highlighted the Institute’s mission to bridge cutting-edge technological innovation with legal, policy, and ethical analysis, and showcased both its current projects and its future research agenda.

The launch featured a panel discussion with our Co-Founder and Director Professor Philippa Webb; our Co-Founder and Senior Fellow Professor Amal Clooney; Brad Smith (Vice Chair and President of Microsoft); Ruth Mchizi (Women Lawyer’s Association of Malawi);  and Jodie Ginsberg (CEO, Committee to Protect Journalists). The panel was moderated by Professor Ngaire Woods, Dean of the Blavatnik School of Government. Together, the speakers reflected on the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies, emphasizing the importance of accountability, access to justice, and human rights in an increasingly digital world.

The event marked the beginning of the Institute’s work as a global centre for research, dialogue, and collaboration on the responsible use of technology in justice systems.
